UNIZIK SUG President Under Fire After Sacking Spree

The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Comrade Ibe Chukwunonso Cico, is in hot water following a sacking spree that has left all employees of the institution’s Directorate of Transport (DOT) without jobs.

The former employees, some of whom had worked with the DOT for many years,  were all disengaged in one fell swoop.

Comrade Ibeh who gave a number of reasons for their disengagement presented a list of nominees as their replacement.

Chief amongst the reasons for their sack was the need to replaced the mostly non-student staff with bonafide students and also to encourage accountability.

However, Ibe is now being accused of reserving more than 90% of the available for members of the Engineering Faculty, which is also his faculty.

But UNIZIK fan page reports that the Union leader has denied the allegation.

“President Cico totally denied such and even disclosed that none of the nominees are either regular or Engineering students because regular students cannot be chanced to be in charge of the ever busy Directorate of Transport (DOT),” Chukwuemerie Uduchukwu, the Page Editor, wrote.

It has also been alleged that no revenue has been generated by the department since his action, largely because the nominees have not been able to assume their duties.

Comrade Ibe’s government had in April introduced a seven-seater-tricycle scheme which is also not sitting well with students.

The students allege that the tricyclists don’t abide by the SUG’s instructions to collect only N20 fare from them.
