Former Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Sam Egwu has said he will not be contesting the Ebonyi North senatorial position in 2015 general election, he insisted that he has never told anybody that he was interested in the position.

Egwu, who dismissed the rumour, noted that he has never lobbied or consulted anybody on the said senatorial ambition, stressing “I have not even heard the speculation myself”.

However, part of the speculation making the round was that the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu, who was Egwu’ best friend during their tenures as governors, has directed the state Governor, Chief Martin Elechi to ensure the senatorial victory of Egwu.
Others alleged that Elechi has prepared the seat for his predecessor as part of measure to reciprocate the gesture of adopting him as the governor of the state in 2007 even amidst public outcry.
Egwu said “honestly, I have never told anybody or consulted anybody that I am contesting the Ebonyi North senatorial position. The national chairman of PDP has not told me that. I am not aware of the said directives”.

Meanwhile, the former Minister of state for Power and Steel, Chief Goddy Ogbaga has declared his interest to run for the seat in 2015.

Ogbaga, who was a minister under Gen. Abdusalami Abubarkar regime, noted that he was eminently qualified to occupy the seat and further assured that he would make a difference.

The Ebonyi senatorial zone is made up of Ohaukwu, Ebonyi, Izzi and Abakaliki local government areas in the state.

The former Minister noted he was favoured by the rotation of the senatorial position, having gone round the other three council areas, stressing that “at the moment, Ebonyi local government is one of the local governments in the zone that has not held any senatorial position”.
