The reigning Nigeria League champions, Enyimba FC, are through to the group stage of the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2011, despite going down 3-0 to Etoile du Sahel.

Enyimba, who are Nigeria’s last team standing in CAF Club competitions this season, progressed at the expense of the Tunisian side who they edged out on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate result.

The Peoples Elephant had taken a giant leap towards appearing at the lucrative group stage of the competition thanks to a hat-trick from on-form forward Mfon Udoh in the first leg.

The build-up to Wednesday’s clash at the Olympic Stadium in Sousse was quite tensed as the Tunisians were quite hostile towards Enyimba who however remained resolute in their mission to end their five-year wait to make it this far in the Champions League.

The Tunisians scored two of their three goals from free kicks and Enyimba had their hearts in their mouth as they seemed to have caved in to Etoile who had close to 20,000 fans cheering them on.

However in the ensuing penalty kicks, Enyimba had the last laugh, wining the penalty kicks 4-3.
