There are many types of jackets for Igbo men to choose from; each fulfilling its purpose and fashion. Discover your favourites and how best to wear them

1. Suit jacket

The suit jacket is the top wear in a two-piece or three-piece suit. It is the most formal way of wearing a jacket. They have evolved from the four-button to the three-button, double-button and currently, the single-button jackets. Also distinct in its features, are the lapel width and the vents. Vents on the jackets could be on either sides or the back. The jackets could be single or double-breasted.

How to wear

• Make sure the suit fits properly and is not too tight or too big.
• When confused about the colour to wear, go for the classic hues- black, navy or grey.
• Shoulder pads must not stick out or be longer than the shoulder.
• The width of the lapel should match the width of the tie to be worn; slim ties go with slim lapel.
• Slim men should go for jackets with a single vent at the back while broad men should wear jackets with side vents.

2. Blazer

Blazers are less formal than the suit jackets. Although they look alike, they are different from the suit jackets and must not be mistaken for the other. Blazers usually have patch pockets, with gold or silver buttons. Most blazers do not come with matching trousers, but are worn as separates.

How to wear

• Most blazers are worn with jeans or chinos because they are made of harder fabrics than the suit jackets.
• Blazers rarely come with matching trousers and should be worn with well-coordinated separates.
• Because they are not purely a formal wear, they should be worn with tee shirts, polo tops or shirts , buttoned or unbuttoned.
• Foot wear play an important role in the outlook; never wear a blazer with trainers or sneakers.
• Pay attention to fit and colour.

3. Varsity jacket

Varsity jackets are masculine, casual-looking and should not be worn as a formal wear. They are sporty, edgy and make the wearer appear stylish. They come in different colour combinations and there are a lot of designs to choose from.

How to wear

• Because it is a casual outfit, it can be worn with tee shirt and polo, with jeans or chinos trousers.
• Best footwear will range from trainers, sneakers, boots and moccasin.
• Some varsity jackets come in prints and should be worn with a matching colour of jeans or chinos trousers.
• To achieve a boyish look with this jacket, make it look preppy.
