Fire yesterday, December 7, engulfed the Anambra state’s commercial hub, claiming one life with about five other persons sustaining various degrees of injuries.

According to sources, the fire incident occurred at two different times, first at about 5pm on Sunday, December 6, and another at about 3am yesterday, at the popular Ochanja market, also destroyed about 15 shops in the market.

The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, was forced to cancel the regular Monday state’s Executive Council meeting as he rushed to the scene of the incident early morning yesterday to see things for himself.

On getting to the scene of the incident, Governor Obiano expressed deep sympathy to those affected by the fire incident and promised that the state government would set up an investigative panel to unravel the cause of the incident so as to ensure that it does not re-occur.

Okechukwu Ali, a spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, who confirmed the unfortunate incident, stated that the person who lost his life was one of the operatives of the State Fire Service who succeeded in stopping the fire outbreak from escalating.

He praised the gallant effort of the fire servicemen, saying that if not for their skill, the inferno would have spread to other parts of the market.

A source said: “N1.5million was recovered from one of the shops and handed over to the owner of the shop.”

“The second fire started about 3am yesterday from one of the shops and extended to about 15 of them despite the efforts of the fire service men and others who battled to quench the inferno.”

According to him, the man that died was one of the Fire Service officials from Onitsha Main Market who came to quench the inferno.

“He met his untimely death when he climbed a storey building to spread the water to the inferno from there but unfortunately for him, the building collapsed and he died in the process,” the eyewitness said.

He further stated that another official of the fire service broke one of his legs while about four other officials of the service sustained various degrees of injuries.

Sunday Obi , was the fire service man who lost his life.
