I Didn’t Leave Any Debt For Obiano – Peter Obi

Several reports has been going round in the media that the former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, left a debt of N17.6 billion for his successor and incumbent governor, Willie Obiano.

But, Obi has publicly dismissed the report, saying the authenticity of the claims can be verified at the Debt Management Office.

In a statement released by his media aide,  Valentine Obinyem, the rebuttal read, “While we recognise that states are owing under different governments, I make bold to say that under Mr. Peter Obi Anambra State did not borrow any money nor raise bonds. The state only guaranteed the sum of 1 billion Naira borrowed by farmers in the state from Fidelity Bank”.

According to Obienyem, his boss fulfilled all his financial obligations while in office without owing workers salaries or contractors.

The former governor had in in his handover note excluded about N5billion which was already penciled down to pay the March 2014 salaries, pension and gratuity as well as certificates for already executed projects in the state.

Obi and Obiano have been having a subtle battle since Obi defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance to the Peoples Democratic Party before the 2015 elections.

Although both of them were reconciled by former president Goodluck Jonathan at the palace of Obi of Onitsha, the aides of both politicians have been throwing subtle jabs at each other’s principals in the media.

Obi is the current Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
