Tragedy struck at Umunkita village in Nenu autonomous community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday when the village head, Samuel Omeonu Erengwa allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself.

Family sources stated that before the incident, the village head said to be in his 70s was said to have over time been deeply involved in the planning of the traditional marriage of one of his daughters scheduled for this Sunday.

Erengwa was said to have discussed extensively with one of his nephews, Onyebuchi, late into Tuesday night on the modalities of the traditional marriage.

Speaking to journalists, Onyebuchi said: “I am shocked over the incident. I left the deceased’s house late Tuesday night after extensive discussion over the daughter’s traditional marriage scheduled for this Sunday, only to see him hanging on the tree this  (Wednesday) morning.”

There were two versions to the septuagenarian’s alleged suicide.

While the first version had it that he killed himself because he could not refund an undisclosed amount meant for the community’s electricity project that was put in his care, another version was that he killed himself due to a letter served him alleging that his son made away with money belonging to some individuals in the community.

One of the villagers stated:  “There were two versions of the story as to why the old man committed suicide. The first was that he was alleged to have embezzled money meant for the community’s electricity project, while the other version has it that the late village head was served a letter alleging that one of his sons made away with some money belonging to some individuals in the community.”
