Unizik Chapter Of ASUU Elects New EXCO

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Chapter on Wednesday, elected new executive members to steer the affairs of the union for the next two years.

Announcing the result of the election, which held simultaneously at the University’s campuses in Awka and Nnewi, Associate Professor Ebenezer Mbaekwe, chairman of the electoral committee, declared Dr Dennis Aribodor of the department of Parastology and Entomology as the new chairperson of the union.

Ikechukwu Okoli of the Department of Applied Microbiology/Brewing was elected as the Secretary General, while Innocent Igwilo of Applied Biochemistry department was elected Internal Auditor.

Other members of the union, who were also elected into the new executive committee are- Gideon Emeahara, Financial Secretary; Toochukwu Okafor, Welfare Secretary; Collins Okafor, Investment Secretary; Charles Nweke, Treasurer and Dr Bonaventure Uzoh, Assistant Secretary.

In an acceptance speech, the new chairman of the Union, Dr Aribodor thanked members of the union for voting him into power.

He also congratulated the out-going chairman, Prof Ike Odumegwu and his executive members for the good work they did in sustaining the rebirth of the union after 12 years in comatose.

“The shoe they are leaving is too large, but we will count on the support of God and members of the congress to move the union to another level. Our administration will work on principles and laid down rules.

“We extend hands of friendship to the varsity management and other stakeholders to move the university forward. Apart from promoting smooth learning, we will continue to ensure that the welfare of the union’s members is fought for”, he assured.

Aribodor called on the coordinator of the union in the zone, Dr Chidi Osuagwu not to abandon the new executive but to continue to guide and play a fatherly role to ensure its growth, while pledging to leave ASUU in the university better than he met it.

Osuagwu, who represented the National Executive Council, (NEC) of ASUU, commended the smooth conduct of the election, promising to report back to the NEC on the success of the election.

It could be recalled that ASUU had been proscribed for 12 years in the institution, but was revived last two years, with Prof Ike Odumegwu emerging as the chairman.
