The House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to investigate the killing of civilians by suspected cult groups in Egbema, Imo State.

It also urged the relevant security agencies to immediately provide enough personnel in strategic locations in Ebgema.

The House called on the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to urgently provide relief materials to the displaced persons and other victims of the attacks.

It condemned the cult groups attack in villages and communities in Egbema.

The resolution emanated from a motion by Gerald Irona (PDP-Imo) which was unanimously adopted without debate.

Mr. Irona said the members of the cult groups on July 9 invaded Ukkwugba in Obiakpu, Egbema clan and killed two persons.

He also said that on July 13, a rival cult group in a retaliatory attack, invaded Obiakpu main town and killed four people, including a community leader.

Mr. Irona said that the same cult group killed over 40 people between January, 2012 and June 2014.

He said that during the attack, several people were abducted and taken hostage.

The legislator said that the continued attacks could spread to other neighbouring villages.

He said that the cult groups, who operated with sophisticated weapons, were dressed in military camouflage.
