Several Igbo youth groups under the auspices of Igbo Youth Coalition met in Enugu at the weekend and endorsed former Chief of General Staff Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (retd) as the new Igbo leader to take over from the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The group also resolved that President Goodluck Jonathan must negotiate with the people of the South-East if he wanted their support in the 2015 presidential election.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, the leader of the youth coalition, Ndubuisi Igwekani, listed the groups that attended the meeting to include Biafra Defence Mission, Igbo Security Council, World Igbo Youth Movement,  Igbo Youth Congress, Ohanaeze Youth Council, among others.

He stated that the meeting in Enugu endorsed the new title of Aka-ji-ofo-Ndigbo conferred on Ebitu Ukiwe.

He said:  “We believe that since the death of Ojukwu, Igbo need a new leadership and by God’s grace, last week, it was confirmed.  The entire Igbo world gathered at Nri that weekend to witness the confirmation and coronation of the new Igbo leader.

“We are thus advising all Igbo groups and associations, schools and churches to give the new leader the necessary support to take the Igbo to a greater height.”

“We also decided that the present crop of leaders have disappointed the Igbo nation, and we are saying that the only man, the younger generation will look up to, is the new Aka-ji-ofo and we believe that he has what it takes to take Igbo to the promised  land.

On the 2015 general elections, Igwekani said the youths decided that the Igbo nation must present a presidential candidate.

Said he: “We agreed that if Jonathan really needs the votes and support from the South-East, he must come down here to negotiate. If, however, he decides to rely on the same faces that have been betraying the Igbo in Abuja, he will be disappointed.Ebit
