Nollywood actors, Chiwatalu Agu, Camela Mberekpe and Bruno Iwoaha, on Monday warned students of higher institutions to shun cultism, saying it will cut short their future dreams.
Agu, who spoke on behalf of the actors as the special guest of honour at the award and unveiling of the film ‘Cross of Decision’, said most cultists in higher institutions do not lead normal life in the society as a result of the negative behaviour they imbibed.
The event, which held at the Cross River State College of Education in Awi, Akamkpa Local Government Area, was put together by Debbies Entertainment Production in collaboration with the Department of Orientation and Public Affairs in the Governor’s Office.
He said, “If I had been a cult member during my school days I would not have been where I am today. Any cultist does not lead a normal life in the society and cannot be appointed into positions of authority. Cultism will cut your future dream, so, shun it.”
The event was attended by the Commissioner representing the state in the board of Niger Delta Development Commission, Mr. Paul Adah, member, House of Representatives, Mr. Dan Asuquo, property developer, Dr. Paul Udayi, Brig-Gen. Mannix Nyiam (retd), among others who were used as role models for the students.
Speaking at the event, the Provost of the state College of Education, Dr. Bassey Ejue, warned the students that anyone found to be associated with cultism would be expelled.
He urged the students to plan for their future by concentrating on their educational pursuit instead of engaging themselves in cultism.
“If you are caught as a cultist in this institution you will be expelled, you do not belong here,” he warned.
The chief launcher at the event, Dr. Paul Udayi, said the issue of insurgency that is currently ravaging some states in the northern part of the country was on the account of cultism.
He warned that cultism had claimed the lives of so many young Nigerians that once had brighter dreams.
Udayi said, “What has culminated into insurgency in Nigeria today is on account of cultism. It is a vice that has claimed the lives of so many bright Nigerians. So, you must shun it.”
Organiser of the event, Debra Rich, said he was inspired by Governor Liyel Imoke who prevailed on the political class in the state public service to denounce cultism in order to rid the state of the devastating menace.
