Why Hard Drugs Flourish In Abia State – nd

THE State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Florence Ezeonye has said that the profitable general business environment that has been reinvigorated and facilitated by the state governor, Dr. Theodore Orji, which has attracted both investors and promoted commerce in the state particularly Aba, the commercial hub, has also drawn drug business to it.

Ezeonye while speaking at the public forum her agency organised to mark this year’s United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking whose theme was “A Message of Hope, Drug Use Disorders are Preventable and Treatable” said “the barons have ensured the availability of hard drugs not only in Abia but also in the neighbouring states like Imo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross river and Bayelsa.”

According to her, this has led to the violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, bunkering and other vices, adding that cocaine and heroine have become common drugs of abuse more than cannabis, which she said is cultivated in Nigeria.

The state NDLEA Commander told reporters that from July 2013 to date, 321 persons had been arrested in connection with illegal drugs, and 25 of this number had been convicted while the remaining 296 were awaiting trial.
