Two other top members of the vigilante group were also arrested following outcry from members of the community, especially the women.

The latest victims of the brutal killings were Obinna Onoja and Ofoma Itodo, who was killed during his mother’s burial ceremony.

We gathered that prior to his death, Ofoma had raised the alarm in a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar over alleged threat to his life.

Before the arrest, women from the community had trooped to the streets few days ago demanding that all those involved in the killings be brought to book.

They had alleged that some persons were hiding under the banner of vigilante group to kill innocent citizens.

The women under the aegis of Aji Women Forum (AWF) with Mrs. Amaka Uramah as leader had cried out to relevant authorities to disband the neighbourhood watch before the community is turned to a war zone.

According to Uramah, “Our sons are being killed in mysterious circumstances. The killings were as a result of the dissolution of the previous vigilante; we lost three of our young men last year and again two of them have also been killed.

‘Before this crisis Aji community has been relatively peaceful that even our traditional ruler, Igwe Simeon Osisis Itodo was awarded as the most security conscious traditional ruler in the entire south east geopolitical zone.

“As mothers, who carried these children in our wombs for nine months, we are tired of seeing horrible things and we want an end to it now”.

Uramah, a teacher and chairperson of the Catholic Women Organization in Aji recounted how body parts of their sons were mutilated.

According to her, last year Festus Idoko and Ndubuisi were slaughtered and their body parts mutilated while Uche Nwaossai’s decomposed body was found in his father’s water tank.

“The vigilante groups became factionalized ever since one highly placed civil servant started sponsoring one of them to carry out his political ambition.

“This is why we are calling for the dissolution of the two groups and we also want this top government official to stop meddling into the affairs of the vigilante from henceforth”, she said.
